2nd Order Thinking

2nd Order Thinking

2nd Order Thinking

Personal Anecdote:

I’ve been thinking about this a lot in the context of groups.
As I’ve travelled, I’ve noticed some groups seem to prize this, and others may not have it at all. (Not a bad thing, only an observation.)
So, running this backwards using the
5 Why’s
5 Why’s
.

Why would a group prize second order thinking?
Long term planning.
Why would long term planning be important?
To accomplish larger goals?
Why are large goals important?
To propel us towards a better future?
(Thinking out loud: This sort of fell apart towards the end. I am not convinced this is quality thinking.)
Inversion
Inversion
: Why wouldn’t a group prize second order thinking?
No incentive to, or no reason to.
Why would there be no reason to prize it?
Because it’s more important to focus on direct/immediate impact of actions. Immediate solutions may propel a group further than 2nd order (complex) solutions?
Why would there be incentive to focus on fast/immediate solutions?
Emergencies, time sensitive things, etc.
So hypothetically, for those who believe speed is #1, these ‘System 1 Groups’ should rise to the top over time.
